Steve Haughton

Director.

  • Bachelor of Park Management
  • Diploma of Natural Resource Management

Steve has over 17 years’ experience in horticulture, revegetation, landscaping, sustainable land management and delivery of professional services across Gippsland and Melbourne.

Prior to partnering up with Gabe Marsden, Steve was running Baw Baw Native Plants where he honed his skills in seed collection, plant propagation, environmental weed control and other land management services. Initially focusing on terrestrial and riparian environments, he developed over time a passion for wetland systems; both natural and constructed.

Steve started his career with the Department of Primary Industries as it was known back then, working with landholders to develop and implement sustainable land practices on their farms.  He developed skills in project management, consultation and facilitation which were vital learnings when he ventured in to starting up his business.

Steve’s interest for natural and constructed riparian and wetland systems emanates from his passion for fishing.  As well as running the everyday operations of Habitat Creations, Steve finds time to wet a line and write about it.  He has been freelance writing for the Victoria & Tasmania Fishing Monthly Magazine since 2007 and for a number of national and local publications.

Gabe Marsden

Director.

  • Diploma of Natural Resource Management
  • Certificate III Production Horticulture
  • Certificate II Bushland Regeneration

Gabe Marsden has over 18 years’ experience working in the Natural Resource Management Industry. Gabe specialises in indigenous plant propagation, nursery management, revegetation and habitat management.

Following completion of his studies Gabe worked at an established indigenous nursery in Gippsland’s Strzelecki Ranges for 3 years before establishing his own indigenous nursery Springsure Hill Native Nursery in 2004.

Here Gabe developed a reputation of growing high quality plants using seed/propagation material of suitable provenance to the West Gippsland, Yarra Valley and South East Melbourne bioregions. In addition to this SHNN operated a high quality planting crew responsible for a number of successful revegetation projects throughout Gippsland.

Gabe is passionate about growing high quality plants using propagation material of both suitable provenance and also high genetic integrity to ensure plants supplied by our nursery are well placed for long term success.

Gabe is also particularly interested in the role and importance of native vegetation in agricultural landscapes and their mutual benefits to both the environment and farm health/productivity.
